i was recently cleaning out the spare bedroom closet and i came across a shopping bag full of cassettes. i have absolutely no use for them at this point, but i hang on to them, i suppose for the exercise in nostaligia. i found a mix tape that i made from the radio (!) over the course of a year 91-92. for some strange reason, i could receive a signal from this upstart station in omaha that was steeped in the alternative/college rock genre of the day. since i can no longer listen to the tape, i thought i would share the contents here, via youtube videos. enjoy!

first up, chapterhouse's pearl: i don't recall anyone at school being into shoegaze at the time, so i'm not sure where this song came from. i just liked it. i also have always thought that the breakdown in the middle is very similar to the one in siouxsie's kiss them for me

next up, james' frustration. i remember at the time the dj talking about how james had several albums (up to that point) but everyone in the states thought that they were new. my james fandom was rather short-lived, however. i just never really got into 'em.

until i had unearthed the tape, i had totally forgotten about the next song, omd's pandora's box. i remember listening to this song a lot in high school. why didn't i get fullyfledged into OMD at the time? i had a little problem known as an all-consuming obsession with all things cure. obviously, i still listened to other music, but not very often.

and of course, the aforementioned kiss them for me was on the tape. this was really my first exposure to siouxsie and the banshees. even being as obsessed with the cure as i was, i didn't know much about the history of both bands and it wasn't until i was firmly ensconced in the goth gang that i became aware of the connection that the two bands shared.

i have to say that i really don't harbor much of a feeling for cracker or teen angst, but i remember that this song was all over the place, including my mix tape.

how sad is that the next video -the soup dragons divine thing makes me long for the days of early 90's fashion? it certainly makes me sad that i long for the days of alice bands, babydoll dresses and obnoxiously huge earrings. it also makes me sad that i was listening to this rather bland band instead of someone really cool like primal scream. but that came later. all is well.

to be continued...

good bye, champagne of beers!

now that molsoncoors and SABmiller have announced their intention to merge at the end of year:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/09/business/worldbusiness/09cnd-beer.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

i am sad to announce that i will no longer indulge in miller high life. i will also say goodbye to pilsner urquel and peroni(which isn't that big of a loss, considering every time i order it, the beer is beyond skunky).

i hate coors with a fiery passion. besides making the vomit-worthy coors light and zima(don't drink the zima, it's for the chicks, man!) i refuse to support those right-wing conservative kooks.

the more i think about it, the more i think that dragging out posting the tour photos to at least four months after the fact is becoming more attractive. or acheivable. whichever you prefer.

this weekend my mom was in town. we ate at chicago chop house STEAKS!, opera DELICIOUS CHINESE FOOD!, RLWASPY LADIES WHO LUNCH, and my new obsession, jerry's. shopping commenced and we all got our makeup done @saks. i held back on my purchases because beauty week is next weekend and nars should be premiering their holiday color then. it is supposed to be sparkly...so i am in heaven. both my mom and i had our hair done by traci. my mom liked her haircut so much, she is threatening to come back to chicago reguarly to have traci cut it!

here are some photos that my mom took while we were on the chicago river boat tour. i can't believe that after living here for nine years, this was the first time that i had been on the tour.

here is one of my favorie residences in chicago...the nautical townhouses on the river at kinze street

iconic chicago shot.

this post was created while i watched marie antoinette. i have to say it's a bit on the boring side. at least sitting at home, watching it on a 20" screen. i should have gone to the theater to see it. visually, it is stunning. but i have to say i am a little disappointed in sofia.

3)nice flyer from elysium, austin

4)french quarter "morning" complete with bloody marys to go!

5, 6 and 7) a night on the "town": jambalaya, barely legal and absinthe!

slighty OK cameraphone photo of the incomparable neil finn.

i've been totally slacking on finishing the photo posts on the rest of the tour. but i feel compelled to post this before i return to posting tour photos. i went to see the incredible crowded house on saturday night @the house of blues. i've only casually listened to the band in the past. early this spring, vh1 classic ran the "farewell to the world" concert several times and i was immediately transformed into a fan. i actually bought the companion cd to the concert and the new album "time on earth" this summer. tickets for the show went on sale in may, so i had been looking forward to it for quite some time. i was not disappointed. neil finn's son, liam finn opened for the band and i was pleasantly surprised at how good he was. can't wait for his album to come out domestically.

here is a lovely photo of jessica and i in pravada, a russian bar in the french quarter. i believe this was post the now infamous red bull + vodka slushie. ah, the alcoholic slushies of the south. i miss you. especially on days like this. chicago people, how amazing would it be if they started serving such beverages here? at happy village, par example?

i received this very, very kind shout-out today in an email sent out to the members of the band's yahoo group list.

Finally we'd like to thank you for being our lady of many
hats - she was our videographer/photographer and merch wrangler all
at once, three jobs which often go unrecognized as far as tours go.
We would not have fared nearly as well without having her with us!
And by the way, you should keep an eye on her - she's got an
amazing voice (we heard her at karaoke in Memphis, TN - which is a
story for the upcoming tour blog...) and though she currently does
not have a band together we're urging her to do so as soon as
possible.

i was so touched that they wrote that about me. i genuinely had a great time on the road and really, really enjoyed helping them out.

end of the road

the last half of the tour was so chaotic, and without much computer/internet access, you'll have to settle for a recap a few days later.

the show in austin was pretty well attended. at least the whole crew came down to elysium to support the endeavor. another late night and little sleep, we were on the road, headed to NOLA. the rest of texas, houston, et al was a blur. it was nothing like the desolation of west texas. 200+ miles and NOTHING! not a damn thing. not even cell service most of the time. civilization was a german town called fredricksburg and the 'texas ranch road' which was endless miles of ranches. and goats. what is up with so many goats in texas? i have never seen that number of goats in one place in my life.

as soon as we entered louisiana, people stopped wearing shoes in public. no kidding. we stopped at a gas station outside of baton rouge(after we had been on some 15 mile bridge across the swap, bayou, whathaveyou) that featured a live tiger (GO LSU!) that someone should really inform PETA about. people were wandering around the gas station with no shoes. it was totally bizarre to me. i'd always thought that i knew "country folk" growing up in the middle of nowhere in iowa and then spending three years of my life in a rather backwater town in missouri. but oh, i was wrong. NOLA was incredible. jessica's hospitality was phenomenal. after the show at the hi-ho lounge, we discovered that we had several days to kill as one of the shows had been cancelled. we spent an entire day wandering around the french quarter, getting drunk. i forced everyone to take a stroll down bourbon street(the smell of vomit will knock out the weak and elderly) and i purchased what possibly could have been the best purchase of my life. a vodka + red bull 20oz slushie. i am totally down with the alcoholic slushies. it's the only way to deal with the excessive summer heat. we spent a several hours at a russian-themed bar in the quarter named pravda. the boys ordered absinthe as we admired the show that the bartender put on for us making the drinks. i astounded everyone by ordering stoli shaken at 1:30am and being able to function the next day. ha. they have no idea about my rep as a robot. the decision was made to spend the next few days in memphis...

mississippi, how i don't really remember much of you. the most notable place that we drove through was jackson(the johnny cash/june carter song kept going through my head). as we went past the parade of chili's, olive garden and outback steakhouse, it occured to me to tell them to stop so that we could have some sort of dinner. instead, we stopped at some truckstop literally in the middle of nowhere. the food was actually pretty good, and we escaped with only a few raised eyebrows. memphis was relaxing, nowhere to really be and no agenda to accomplish. we headed down to beale street in search of food and nightlife. we ate at rendezvous, delicious, delicious bbq with michelob on tap. there was a big neon sign in the bar that said, "proudly serving michelob since 1954", and we all had a 'when in rome' attitude. the nightlife in memphis consisted of mostly beale street bars and blues clubs. i stepped into a couple, just to see what it was all about. i discovered a bar that sold nothing BUT 190 proof grain alcohol slushies! it had the added bonus of karaoke, so i drug everyone in with me. i was proud that everyone took their turn at the mic. fun accomplished!

the drive to wichita was pretty unremarkable, nothing like the drive through arizona desert and new mexico. we did go through little rock and part of oklahoma, but i was asleep or reading for most of it. we arrived in wichita rather late, and as soon as we were shown the rooms that were ours for the night, i got ready to jump into bed. everyone else stayed up until 5 am, so it was a slow day before the show. the promoter took us to village inn and i got pie! i had been really jonesing for dairy queen, since there seem to be a shop every five miles in texas, but this was a sufficient alternative. the club in wichita was a D I V E, complete with a garage sound set-up. i drank my boulevard amber and tried to keep everyone in good spirits. the show went off fairly well, the crowd was a bit weird. i was having a nice conversation with a boy who had to have been all of 19....he asked me how long i had been filming the band, etc. etc. i tried to convince him that film school is not a waste (ha!) and that he should keep on because even after all these years, i still love it. then the town skank came and gave him a lapdance. i am not exaggerating. she was a sight to see. at one point, while on the boy's lap, she turned to me and said, "where are you from? you look pretty good for a blonde." i made a face and told her that what she said was offensive. i got off easy with that one. she accosted poor mera, not once, but twice. mera was forced to hide in the van the rest of the night. the guy that showed up to dj after the show was great. he's from KC and apparently took over the night that the band was originally supposed to play. i was even more disappointed that the show at davey's was cancelled. the band's free drink for the night was free PBR in cans, which always seems to make me sleepy, so i again went to bed early. we didn't get started on the drive home to chicago until 3pm.

12+ hrs in a van is a long time. the only other road trip that i've been on, we topped out at a return trip from DC at 24 hrs. the nice part about the drive home was the fact that i didn't need to frantically rely on michael's treo for directions. i knew the drive by heart, once we were out of wichita and on I-35. i convinced everyone to stop at the I-80 truckstop in iowa. it's my stop on the way to and from my parents' house. it's on 22 acres and pretty impressive, even to city kids. dairy queen was sadly closed for the night, but i did have a lovely BLT and some fried califlower in the 24 hr restaurant. with 200 miles to go, i focused on just trying to keep the driver entertained.

i arrived home at 3:30am. promtly dropped my bags in the living room, relived that it was the last time i would have to lug that shit up stairs and went to bed. i slept most of the day on saturday, made a few calls, checked email. the band picked me up at 5:30pm so that we could make the trek to milwaukee. we stopped at the mars cheese castle on the way. i lived in wisconsin for five years, but had never gone to the cheese castle. i purchased a six pack of new glarus spotted cow as i have missed new glarus greatly since they stopped distributing it to chicago. people showed up to the show in milwaukee, maybe a few less than expected, but not a bad turn out overall. i got to see my friend, michelle, before she packs up and moves to seattle. four too many shots of jameson later, i found myself in the van with the video camera on. i've been promised a copy, but i wonder if i might want all copies of the video destroyed? i doubt it. i'm not really embarrassed by much. i can't recall when we got back to chicago, but it was a near repeat of the night before.

i woke up sometime in the early afternoon, a bit confused about how i was actually in my apartment. slowly got ready for the final show, after a phone call from my mom signalled that it was time for me to leave. i do have to say, it was a bit sad setting up the merch booth and tripod for the last time. i had really gotten setting everything up down to a science. and oh, the exhaustion! it had finally set in. i needed a red bull+ vodka to keep myself alive before the show. after my band was done, michael's other band went on. i had met them the night before in milwaukee, as they played with us at that show as well. during one of the songs, the girl lead singer motioned for me to come up to the stage. i ended up getting up on the stage, dancing with her, and getting my dress unzipped! the guys in the band got quite a show! too bad that the welcoming party hadn't stuck around, as i am sure that the would have been amused by the antics.

so, what's the verdict? i can feel you all asking, really, i can. and it's this. i would do it all again. i really enjoyed being on the road, the unpredictability and lack of satisfactory toilets nonwithstanding. i had a great time. i got to meet some really cool people. i got to drive through the desert. what more could a girl ask for?

i don't plan on discontinuing this blog just because i am no longer on tour. entries might be few and far between, but i plan to keep it up, either as something that i can post to when the mood strikes me, or as a space on the web where i can post traveling stories. i haven't figured that out yet. i believe that you can add this into your RSS feed, or whathaveyou, to get alerts when i actually do update.

oh yeah, maybe i should give out some make-up tips? :)

so, i am here:

with andy. he's thinking dirty thoughts, and i'm in a post-dinner, campari and soda haze. i am missing the amazing weather in santa barbara already!!! it's about 96F and sunny. sooo LA. and for those of you that don't know by the photo, i am writing this from the grove apple store. apparently, that was the line for the iphone. things seem to have died down today.

i'll keep this short and sweet. tonight is the first mercurine show of the tour. it's at the mint, which is supposed to be close to my hotel. we'll see. nothing is ever that close in this town.

love and kisses.

today was a typical day for me in santa barbara. woke up, indulged in some coffee in bed and snuggled with my sister's DVR recording of yesterday's "days of our lives". i went to the new nail place on state st. that she recommended...they were very, very nice. and impressed with my tip! it was the standard one that i give for a mani + pedi, but they seemed very pleased with it. had lunch at a cafe downtown. managed to pick up everything on my list at the drugstore and did a walk-through at paseo nuevo http://www.santabarbaramall.com the infamous flip-flop store is closed! (a little background for those unfamiliar with the flip-flop store) last year, when i was here, i was on a mission to get a pair of havianas flip-flops. my sister had two nice pairs and told me that she got them at this tiny store in the mall. the tiny store that only sells flip-flops and is seemingly only open for one hour per week. personally, i think the (now former) employees of said store had the coolest job, ever. flip-flops aren't really a hard sell around here, and with the easy work schedule, lots of beach time! i guess i'll have to go to montecito tomorrow to get my flip-flop shopping on.

but i digress.;.

i drove around for a bit, found another HUGE beach and took a few pictures from the cliff that i happened to be driving up. after that, i plugged in the directions to the four seasons biltmore (GPS in rental cars, i love you) and headed to butterfly beach. i didn't really spend much time on the beach, as i didn't have my sunscreen with me. laugh if you must, but i managed to burn the upper part of my left arm yesterday on the drive north from LA. i am HYPER senstive to the sun! i just wandered around for a few minutes and then made an executive decision to have a cocktail (at 3:30 pm, gasp!) on the patio at the biltmore. i love the mix of posh and cahz there. i wasn't out of place one bit in my t-shirt, linen skirt and flip flops. lots of interesting people watching. and my server was the most adorable 20 yr old boy ever :) i could have stayed there for many more hours having cocktail after cocktail, but it is a bit pricey. i had a pinot grigio, but was tempted to try the "vesper" which is the "casnio royale" drink that 007 comes up with on the spot during the casino scene. i sort of regret not getting it, because who knows when i'll be in some place that actually has the components and the skill to mix that very drink. i really wanted to chat up the waiter...i wanted to tell him while it must suck sometimes to serve overpriced cocktails to rich assholes, he gets to do it across the street from the ocean!

did i mention that the weather is absoluteludly amazing here? no humidity, not a cloud in the sky. exotic and beautiful vegetation everywhere. i picked three tiny tomatos from the wild tomato plant that is growing on the patio outside of my sister's apartment. she also has an orange tree, with oranges the size of grapefruits. she said that the oranges themselves weren't that great, but it's nice to look at. i live on one of the shadiest streets in chicago, but when you have 70ft palm trees outside your window, it's a difficult competition.

ok, i'll admit that i'm a little tipsy and babbling. i should get ready for dinner now, anyway. i just made reservations at some seafood place for this evening. baby hasn't been there yet, but it's supposedly good. i think that she is going to take me to some show after that.

p.s. the mix that i made for my time between here and the tour is awesome. thanks richard, for helping me w/my ipod!!!

the pretty in pink roll @arigato sushi in santa barbara this is heauen on earth! to finish the night off at my fav bar in sb-the press room

just returned from my obligatory before trip nars counter run. i felt guilty going to macy's, like i am cheating on my saks girls...but saks isn't two blocks from the office and it's blazing hot out today. the semi-creepy girl helped me. she always remembers me(maybe she doesn't get very many customers?) which is nice, but she's strange. it could have something to do with the fact that the first time she rang me up, i was making an exchange and she asked if my boyfriend had bought the makeup for me as a gift. i said, "no, it was a present from my friend's husband." she gave me a very strange look. anyway, i was there to get more black eyeliner(i am going to a lot of goth clubs on this tour, heh), but they were out of stock, so i bought this black powder with a greenish shimmer to it. i hope it works well!

packing, packing and more packing. today will mark three days of packing. i don't recall how long it took me to pack the last time i spent 2 weeks in CA. not this long, i hope. i was almost on the road as much as i will be now...i've got to put an end to it tonight. i've got plans to meet the posse for sushi + drinks. let's see if i can stay on good behavior and come home at a reasonable hour w/out having had __ shots of jameson. i haven't been on a flight before 10am in about four years and tomorrow i will need to be on my way to the airport before the time i usually get up. it will be worth it to get into santa barbara before 4pm(at least that is what i will be telling myself when i am up before dawn).

good-bye unbearable humid weather(at least for the weekend), good-bye worthless #56 bus that never comes when it supposed to, good-bye division street bars, and last but not least, good-bye dear chicago friends! i'll see y'all in a couple of weeks. hopefully sans souther'n accent(i'll try, but i can't promise anything. everytime i go west of the mississippi, it hits me).

butterfly beach, arigato sushi w/my sister, and LA friends...see you very, very soon!
